Case studies

The study areas selected in this research project correspond to particularly unstable coastal stretches, where over the past few decades urban settlements with a strong touristic motivation were established on previous fishing villages: Vagueira, Costa da Caparica and Quarteira.

The three study areas have heavy coastal defence structures and are protected since the 60s and 70s with groyne fields. Its beaches have been subject to artificial sand renourishments in the last decade.

Despite having in common recent growth dynamics characterized by heavy urban pressures, these three areas had differentiated occupation processes, live different social dynamics and present different levels of coastal erosion.
